What Does Head Lice Look Like? There are 3 forms of lice: the egg also called nit, the nymph and the adult.

Nits are head lice eggs - small, hard to see - laid by the adult female at the base of the hair shaft.

The Nymph is a hatched nit feeding on blood which turns into an adult within about a week.

The adult louse lives up to about 30 days and needs to feed on blood also to live. It dies within 2 days if it doesn't have access to blood.
